Introduction

Erik Michelfelder, MD, is Professor of Pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine and Director of the Fetal Cardiology Program at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Heart Center. He has been practicing cardiology for 25 years. Dr. Michelfelder’s primary clinical and academic interests are fetal cardiology, congenital heart disease and non-invasive cardiac imaging in children. Prior to joining the Heart Center, he was the Director of the Fetal Heart Program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, where he worked for 18 years. His current research involves examining echocardiographic predictors of outcome in a number of fetal cardiac conditions, including hypoplastic left heart syndrome, pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum, and transposition of the great arteries. He also has interests in quality and process improvement science and tele-medicine applications in fetal and pediatric cardiology. He is active in the American Society of Echocardiography, American Heart Association and Fetal Heart Society.
